It is played like a tamborim in samba schools in Rio, including Mocidade and Beija Flor.  It can be played with a wood stick for a softer sound, but in baterias it is played with a flexible nylon stick with a brass end, producing a very loud cutting sound. The Ivsom frigideira is the finest available. The size and angle of the handle make it practical and comfortable to play with a flipping motion in the style of a tamborim.
