Inspiration If you have ever walked along the wide open beaches of Devon and Cornwall you will know the calming energising experience it brings. The pull to return to the peaceful waves lapping on the shore, or the powerful surfing waves rolling in from the Atlantic ocean. Maenporth Beach Waves is inspired a quintessential sandy cove on the Cornish south coast on the outskirts of the historic and thriving town of Falmouth. The gently sloping beach of Maenporth was once a natural harbour but today the shallow inlet is an ideal spot for young swimmers, paddlers, and kayaks, whilst at low tide the rock pools are plenty. There are excellent family facilities that include a cafe, car parking, public toilets and the opportunity to hire out a range of watersports activities including kayaking, sailing and scuba diving. The shipwreck of the ‘Ben Asdale’ can be spotted off shore, and is often explored by divers. Medium I like to work in oils because of their versatility. You can layer the paint so that it has a translucency. Also It is so robust a medium I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too. Personally, I find that working in oils is the ultimate art medium. It allows me to create a wide range of effects, from subtle layers to bold strokes, and it also provides me with the necessary tools to bring my artwork to life. For me it is a timeless medium. Background Studying film and video art at the University of Plymouth has impacted on the way I paint. Creating a sense of movement and escapism in my work is important to me. If the viewer can feel they could walk across the sand or dive into the sea that is what I want to achieve. I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2008 at the University of Plymouth and am an Ambassador artist for the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark.
